What are polyphenols?

Polyphenols are natural compounds found in various plant-based foods, including extra virgin olive oil, that have gained significant attention for their potential health benefits.

These bioactive substances are renowned for their antioxidant properties. High polyphenol extra virgin olive oils are being actively studied for their potential to support heart health, reduce inflammation, and contribute towards neuroprotective effects. Source

Not all extra virgin olive oils are created equal however—and if you're buying olive oil for health—studies suggest that use of a higher polyphenol oil has lead to better health outcomes. Source

How many spoonfuls of extra virgin olive oil should I take a day?

Some research suggests that benefits from high polyphenol EVOO can be conferred from as little as two tablespoons (25 ml) per day. Source

The generally accepted range between studies is between 2 and 4 tablespoons per day. It's worth noting that EVOO is a calorie dense food and so should be factoried into your total daily calorie allowance so you can maintain a healthy weight.

If you're not used to olive oil then start with a small amount and slowly increase, so your stomach and digestive system has time to get used to it.

How do I know which extra virgin olive oils are real?

'Fake' oil is usually made with low grade olive oil, chemically refined olive oil, or even blended together with cheaper oils of another type, like seed oil.

This topic has been gaining popularity recently. This tends to be more of an issue in other countries where regulations are less strict, and more of an issue on the cheaper end of the spectrum.

It's still good to be aware of some of the factors that go into making a high quality oil, so read our ultimate guide to find out more. The oils found on this website are hand-selected and are therefore some of the best quality oils available to the UK.
