Sangre de Olivo Elixir, Delivered directly from Spain to the UK

A new name has landed in the high polyphenol space: Sangre de Olivo, a Spanish extra virgin olive oil that is taking a rounder and more fruit-forward approach, without dropping polyphenols altogether.

Where a lot of the oils we cover lean into bitterness and classic peppery taste that comes with polyphenols, Sangre de Olivo takes a slightly different line. On the nose it's ripe and green-olive fruity, and that carries through to the palate — tomato-leaf and fresh-cut grass notes up front, with a pleasant moderate polyphenol kick trailing in on the finish. It's the profile you reach for when you want the health case for a high polyphenol oil but without the more intense, throat-burn you get at the top of the polyphenol range we cover.

Sangre currently tests at 521 mg/Kg - a nice level that, as you use the oil, will hold well above the 250 mg/Kg polyphenol health claim benchmark set by the EU Commission. I reached out to see whether the Sangre would be happy to publish their certification but they have yet to receive the third-party lab report in English. In the meantime, they happily shared with me the Spanish lab report, undertaken by a lab approved by the International Olive Oil Council. The lab used HPLC for their polyphenol report.

Tasting notes

Sangre is made with Picual olives, a widespread and well loved Spanish cultivar.
